Follow the Surface Temperatures

Looking out over Lake Superior and determining where to fish might seem like an impossible task, but here are few things to focus on the next time you’re heading out on the big pond.

In most areas of the Great Lakes there isn’t much structure to focus on, so instead we must look at something entirely different. When I am deciding where I am going to take my clients out in the morning the two main things I focus on are the surface temperatures, and water color. Even the slightest variation in temperature and color brings structure to the Lake Trout and Salmon, in a place that would otherwise be without structure.

There are a few things you can do to find these water temperature changes and color changes.

  • Drive your boat all over the lake until you find these changes in water color and temperature.
    • There isn’t enough time in the day to drive over the wide expanses of Lake Superior, nor do I want to burn that much fuel, but if you want to know first hand, this might work for you.
  • The second option is to get up on the high hills of Duluth, and use binoculars to look for water color
